Understanding mental health and support services for your student

During your students’ experience at university, they can encounter a great deal of stress (e.g., academic, social, family, work, financial and cultural). Although most cope successfully with the demands of college life, sometimes the pressures become overwhelming.

If you notice your student struggling with the stress that comes with college life, Oregon State provides a variety of resources that you could recommend to keep them happy and healthy.

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) provides OSU students with individual, couples and group counseling as well as outreach and education to OSU and the surrounding communities. Studies show that a community culture of positive mental health bolsters academic success and personal development. Encourage your student to learn more about Counseling and Psychological Services.

Anytime Anywhere: Counseling and Psychological Services is partnering with MySSP to expand services to students. Through the Anytime Anywhere program, students now have access to free and confidential mental health and wellness counseling at any time of day, from anywhere in the world, 365 days a year. Encourage your student to learn more here.
Student Health Services provides clinical services, prevention and wellness services, survivor care, advocacy and much more. Health educators and other professionals provide campus-wide comprehensive primary health care, disease prevention and treatment services as well as extensive health promotion programs. Encourage your student to learn more here: Student Health Services.

FERPA Reminder and FAQs:

What is FERPA? The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) is legislation that protects the privacy of your student’s records and regulates how the information is used. Release of student records at Oregon State University is bound by the federal law (FERPA), the Oregon Revised Statutes, and by the Oregon Administrative Rules. Learn more about FERPA.

FERPA FAQs:

What information can I – or can’t I – access through the university regarding my student?

Only directory information can be released to parents of dependent or independent students. Any other information such as grades, registration status, address, conduct, etc. must all be released by the student before the university can discuss these things with you.

But what if I’m paying for their time at OSU?

Unfortunately, you need to work out with your student what information can be released to you.

How can my student release this information to me? You can find the FERPA release form here.
