News, articles, and interesting stuff from the College of Business
From representing his country in skateboarding at the Southeast Asia Games to creating viral TikToks with the college's student-led social media team, Cam Vu Tong '24 has had a fascinating experience.
Cam Vu Tong ’24 came to the OSU College of Business as a transfer student, bringing the credits from his associate’s degree to complete his bachelor’s in business administration, management and operations.
As an international student from Vietnam, taking on work-study positions were an important part of his student experience. He transferred in with a prestigious and valuable Provost’s Scholarship, an award that helped cement his decision to finish his degree at OSU.
“I decided to study at OSU because of the robust financial support,” Vu said. “I chose an operations management major because I have always wanted to create and manage an organization that brings good cause to the world.”
Bringing good to the world is a noble endeavor of course, but with Vu comes a certain kind of style.
Vu’s a skater. He is a member of the Skating Federation of Vietnam, who represented his country in skateboarding at the Southeast Asia Games. He founded the youth project, Skateboarding Foundation Vietnam, with the mission to empower personal growth through building community, social belonging and skating.
It was natural for him to land on the college’s student social media team, working to build engagement among graduate students for the team’s wildly viral and self-directed TikTok channel, among other social platforms.
Within that role, he specialized in graphic design, filming trending content, developing content for graduate events and resources and an additional focus on international alumni.
Vu also brought his unique personal success, passion for building strong communities to the brainstorming sessions of the college’s edgy social media team, who, during just fall term, have executed 99 pieces of content that garnered 1.3 million impressions across 134,000 engaged accounts on all channels.
“Working with the College of Business social media team has been a fascinating experience,” Vu said. “The diverse skill set of each team member not only taught me to think outside the box but also enhanced my collaboration and flexibility.
The social media team and everywhere in the College of Business is a place to bring your “you”, discover the amazing resources available through professors and facilities, and discover the true importance of friendship. Vu found all that.
“I am the person who understands myself the best,” Vu said. “I would tell anybody attending OSU about the importance of building relationships, and I would tell any international student – don’t be afraid to speak up with unique ideas.”
Vu, who graduated in December, moved to southern California to work as a tutor in an elementary school in Los Angeles, bringing his compassion for others, his creativity and personal motivation.
“I have a favorite quote from Anthony Liccione that inspires me, ‘It’s not how many friends you can count, it’s how many of those you can count on.’”
