As the academic year winds down at Oregon State University, as a parent or supporter of a business student who just finished their first year in the College of Business, you should take pride in their accomplishments and growth.

The transition to university life is a significant milestone, and it’s natural to have questions about how to support your student as they return home for the summer. It’s important to engage in conversations that not only reflect on the past year but also look forward to the upcoming fall term.

Encourage your student to confirm their return to campus by signing up for fall classes, which is a crucial step in maintaining their academic trajectory. If your student has yet to register for fall classes, we encourage them to do this as soon as possible to ensure the best course availability (and before our new students register at orientation). You can find how to do this through our Office of the Registrar.

If your student is considering transferring to another institution, it’s essential they consult with an academic advisor in the College of Business to ensure a smooth transition and proper credit transfer.

In the coming weeks, we encourage you to discuss summer plans together, whether those plans involve a job, an internship or other productive activities that align with their academic and career aspirations. The Career Success Center at the College of Business offers a wealth of resources to assist in securing employment or internships, enhancing résumés, and preparing for landing a job that aligns with your student’s experiences and goals.

Relaxation and downtime are equally important for a well-rounded summer experience. Inquire about their plans to unwind and recharge before the next academic year begins. Summer is a time for rejuvenation, and for students, it’s a well-deserved break from the rigors of academic life. To unwind, students should explore hobbies that they may not have had time for during the school year, such as reading, painting or getting outdoors.

By asking thoughtful questions and providing a supportive environment, you can help your student reflect on their first-year experience and prepare for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. Remember, the resources at Oregon State University are designed to support both students and families throughout this journey.

Our hope is that you feel confident in ensuring that your student is ready to return in the fall, equipped with new skills, experiences and a renewed sense of purpose.
